Gardens of Hayama

Cultural Excursion

Join us for an exploration of the scenic area of Hayama, just south of Tokyo on the Miura Peninsula.  We'll visit an iris garden tended by locals in traditional dress, have lunch in a quaint rural café and stroll through the grounds that once belonged to the Imperial family, now listed as one of Japan's most beautiful gardens.    

Excursion Details
  • Minimum of 12 members, maximum of 18.
  • Ages 18 and older are welcome.
  • This excursion will be held rain or shine.  Irises are beautiful in the rain, so we'll be making the trip no matter the weather!
  • Our lunch will be a course menu feature steamed pork and vegetables for the main dish.  Certain allergies may be able to be accommodated, so please contact Mandy with any concerns or questions.

Best of Ashikaga: Lean Management, Rural Winery, Japan's First School and more!

Discover unique aspects of Japanese business culture and how the entire town of Ashikaga uses '5S' workplace organization methodology to engage their employees.  You will visit two Japanese companies for behind-the-scenes access to their factories and hear from the local Chamber of Commerce to learn how Ashikaga became known as the "5S Mecca" of the world.  Learn how "Lean" principles, including 5S, were originally developed in Japan (by Toyota) and are now an internationally recognized approach to continuous improvement.

Stop along the way for lunch at a very special local winery.  Take in the views of Ashikaga's beautiful spring flowers and countryside while enjoying fresh local delicacies and a glass of wine.  In the afternoon, visit two famous cultural heritage sites in Ashikaga.  Go inside the first school in Japan founded 600 years ago that has applied for World Heritage listing.  Enjoy the beauty of a famous temple that is resplendent with spring flowers.

A (Half) Day in Daikanyama

Cultural Excursion

Daikanyama, sandwiched between Shibuya and Ebisu, has become one of Tokyo's hippest enclaves.  Along with learning how to reach this hidden neighborhood, we'll browse the numerous shops and boutiques, visit a "secret" century-old home and traditional garden, pop into an architecturally-notable bookstore and share first-hand reviews of the area's many dining options.  Cap off the excursion with an optional lunch at one of Tokyo's newest craft breweries, built on the site of the old train tracks.  This is the perfect excursion for those who want to see one of the Tokyo's trendiest neighborhoods with the guidance of a "local" (Mandy currently calls Daikanyama home!).

  • This excursion will be cancelled in case of heavy rain.
  • A lot of walking is involved, but it is not strenuous.

Exploring the Mitake Valley

Cultural Excursion

If you think Tokyo is all cars and concrete, this tour will completely change your perception of the capital!  Join us as we head to the Mitake River Valley, still a part of Tokyo but worlds away in appearance.  We'll walk along the river path, visit two museums (one with a top-rated rock garden) and sample some local sake while relaxing along the riverside.  With any luck, we'll also catch the last of the blooming cherry blossoms.

  • Ages 18 and older are welcome.
  • This excursion will be in good weather only.
  • Participants should be in good physical condition.  The river path is mostly flat but requires walking shoes or sneakers.  We will be covering a distance of 5km, with hills on either end.  
  • Lunch will be a casual meal of udon, soba, curry or rice balls.  Participants with specific food allergies may want to bring their own bento or packed lunch.

Thatched Roofs, Kimono & Mt. Fuji: A Cultural Excursion to the Japanese Countryside

Enjoy an adventure to the largest of Mt. Fuji's five lakes, Kawaguchi-ko.  We'll begin with a visit to the Kubota Museum, home to the most beautiful kimono every made.  The museum's garden and structures are also impressive.  Next, dine on local specialities before strolling along the lake shore in order to take in amazing Mt. Fuji views.  Re-board the bus for a short ride to a gorgeous thatched roof village overlooking nearby Lake Saiko.  This will be an incredible excursion into the countryside of Japan that should not be missed!

  • Lunch will be a local speciality called 'Kabocha Houtou'.  This is a thick 'soup' containing pumpkin and other vegetables, with noodles, in a miso-flavored broth.  It will be served with a couple of Japanese side dishes, pickles, and choice of alcohol or soft drink.  Vegetarians and some food allergies can be accommodated.  *Please inquire before signing up.

Detailed Tour Overview

Join us on a one-day excursion to the beautiful town of Ashikaga that is known as the "5S Mecca" of the world.  We will visit two cultural heritage sites, enjoy lunch at a local winery, and visit at least two local businesses.

Unlock the mystery and discuss the unique aspects of Japanese businesses, its deep-rooted culture and its impact on global business, and how the entire town uses "5S" principles.  We will also visit the first formal school in Japan, founded 600 years ago, that has applied for World Heritage listing and visit a famous local temple.  

Ashikaga has uniquely applied "5S" methodology to the entire community.  A focus of the factory visits will be "Lean" principles (developed by Toyota) including the 5S workplace organization methodology, which was originally developed in Japan and is now internationally recognized as a standard & discipline that supports continuous improvement.  You will have the opportunity to go inside small successful Japanese companies and learn how they motivate and support the creativity of their employees and how they use 5S methodologies. 

Enjoy lunch at a local winery that specializes in employing and developing mentally disabled people into successful farmers.  We will also take int he views of Ashikaga's beautiful spring flower and countryside.
